Bookkeepers vs CPA's

Do you find yourself spending a fair amount of time talking to you CPA, and paying high fees for it? Did you know that an experienced, advanced Bookkeeper can save you lots of time, and lots of money?

Let's first clarify what a bookkeeper is:

"A bookkeeper, also known as an accounting clerk or accounting technician, is a person who records the day-to-day financial transactions of an organization. A bookkeeper is usually responsible for writing the "daybooks". The daybooks consist of purchases, sales, receipts, and payments. The bookkeeper is responsible for ensuring all transactions are recorded in the correct day book, suppliers ledger, customer ledger and general ledger. The bookkeeper brings the books to the trial balance stage. An accountant may prepare the income statement and balance sheet using the trial balance and ledgers prepared by the bookkeeper." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bookkeeping).

Now, let's clarify what a CPA is:

"Certified public accountants (CPAs) provide a broad range of financial services to small businesses. These services include preparation of financial statements and tax returns, providing advice on various aspects of business (operations, management, etc.), and assisting in the development and installation of effective accounting systems. The CPA has a comprehensive educational background. Each candidate must attend a four-year program in accounting at an accredited institution. A CPA must also pass a standard test for competency in the field. The CPA exam covers four main areas: Law and Professional Responsibility; Auditing Procedures; Accounting and Reporting (taxation and accounting); and Financial Accounting and Reporting. This exam is administered in every state by a state board of accounting." (http://definitions.uslegal.com/c/certified-public-accountants/)

An experienced Bookkeeper is somewhere in between. He/she will have the practical, hands-on expereince of daily bookkeeping, managment of AP/AR/Payroll staff, and has experience in financial statements. You and your CPA benefit from the experienced Bookkeeper, as your CPA is able to prepare taxes and year-end Journal Entries more efficiently because the experienced Bookkeeper has everything in order.
